EDID Basics
Extended Display Identification Data, or EDID, is a way for a source, such as a computer, to discover the capabilities of whatever sink, our video output, it is connected to. For our purposes, the sink is an Avocor display and the source is whatever device that sends data through the display, such as a computer or wireless presentation device.
EDID information resides in the sink and is made available through the connection to a source device via HDMI, DP, DVI, etc.. When a sink is connected to a source, it receives power to its EDID circuit from the source. The source and sink then share their EDID tables, perform a "handshake" agreement on the preferred resolution and frame rate, and then an image appears on your screen.
The EDID Switch (E20, F50, W)
Avocor E, F, and WCD series displays come with a built-in EDID Switch that can be toggled via the OSD menu. This feature will allow you to set the EDID cap on your display to "4k2k@60hz," "4k2k@30hz," or "1080p" for each source input.
Simply open the OSD menu, and navigate to Adv. Settings>EDID Switch.
Setting the EDID cap ensures that the display will not settings higher than the cap placed on a given source input on the display:
- In the above example, since the cap for HDMI2 is set to 1080P, the highest resolution the source will output to the display is 1080P, even if the source is capable of higher resolutions.
- Likewise, the highest resolution and frame rate HDMI1 will receive is 4K@60, so anything leading up to that resolution, including 1080P or lower, will output from a given source to that input, and the display will accommodate it.
Switching the EDID for an input can sometimes resolve issues impacting video quality from a source device. If you run into color or resolution issues with a given device, switching to a lower EDID cap is a good first step to troubleshoot the issue.
